Reporter Lee Sang-cheol = Saudi Arabia’s coach Herve Renard (54, France), who defeated “champion” Argentina at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, was mentioned as a candidate for the command tower of the Iranian national football team.

Iranian media Teheran Times said on the 18th (Korean time), “The Iran Football Association is in the process of appointing a new national football team coach. The Iran Football Association’s list of candidates selected includes coach Renard.”

Iran broke up with Carlos Queiroz (Portugal) after being eliminated from the group stage with 1 win, 2 losses (3 points) at the Qatar World Cup. Coach Queiroz, who left Iran, took the helm of Qatar until the 2026 World Cup in North and Central America.

Initially, it was known that Iran would appoint native coaches such as Javad Nekounam, but the Iran Football Association put foreign coaches, including Renard, on the list of candidates.

However, Iran has no plans to appoint Renard as coach until paying a penalty to Saudi Arabia. The Iran Football Association explained, “Director Renard currently has a contract period with Saudi Arabia. If Renard terminates the contract, he will be put on the shortlist.” 먹튀검증

In July 2019, coach Renard, who took the helm of Saudi Arabia, led Qatar to advance to the World Cup finals and caused a surprise by beating Argentina 2-1 in the group stage of the finals. However, Saudi Arabia failed to advance to the round of 16 after losing consecutively to Poland and Mexico.

Meanwhile, Iran is scheduled to play friendly matches against Russia and Iraq on March 23 and 28 in Tehtan.
