After a “one-day” slump in his last game, KT Wiz pitcher Uhm Sang-baek proved his ace instincts with another strong performance.

The right-hander started the 2023 KBO League regular season game against the Doosan Bears at Jamsil Baseball Stadium in Seoul on Friday and pitched six innings of three-hit ball with one walk and seven strikeouts. He received early support from the bats and left the mound with a 4-0 lead in the seventh inning, needing his seventh win of the season.

Uhm had previously pitched against the Suwon Hanwha Eagles on April 9, giving up five runs on three hits. He went seven innings to help his team come from behind and earn the win, but he was left disappointed with his performance.

On the 16th, he was back to his old self. His fastball, which topped out at 149 mph (16 pitches), was strong, but he bombed Doosan hitters with his main weapon, his changeup, which he threw for 47 of his 85 pitches. He got off to a strong start, striking out the side in the first and third innings.

Meanwhile, the KT bats provided solid run support. In the top of the second inning, they scored four runs against Doosan starter Kim Dong-joo on a double, walk, bunt, stolen base, and home run.

The only run came in the fourth inning, when he was well on his way to the win. A two-pitch high fastball to leadoff hitter Ahn Jae-seok was caught and hit into the right-center field gap. Right fielder Ahn Chi-young chased the ball well, but was unable to make the catch. Ahn Jae-seok advanced to third and the hit was recorded as a triple. Uhm Sang-baek continued the crisis by walking the next batter, Jose Rojas, on eight pitches.

He overcame the crisis with power. Uhm struck out the next batter, Kim Jae-hwan, to put out the fire. Luck was on his side. Facing the next batter, Kim In-tae, Uhm threw a 144 km/h fastball, which Kim took advantage of to make a fastball, but it went right into the first baseman’s glove. Rojas, who had slid into second base on the hit, was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.토토사이트

In the fifth inning, the bases were loaded, but it didn’t pile up. Uhm Sang-baek walked the first batter, Yang Seok-hwan, but induced a double play to the next batter, Kang Seung-ho, to clear the bases. He then gave up a single to Jang Seung-hyun, but with no runners in scoring position, he retired the next batter, Heo Kyung-min, on a grounder to third base to complete the win. In the sixth inning, Uhm struck out three more batters on just seven pitches to complete his quality start (six or more innings pitched and no more than three earned runs allowed).

He threw 85 pitches. With some time to spare, KT replaced Son Dong-hyun on the mound, ending Uhm’s mission. With seven wins under his belt, Uhm’s season ERA dropped slightly to 3.48.
