Bad luck abounded at the plate for San Diego Padres infielder Ha Sung Kim (28). He went hitless and watched his team lose.
Kim was batting sixth and playing shortstop against the Chicago Cubs in the ‘2023 Major League Baseball’ game at Petco Park in San Diego, California, on Friday (June 5). He went hitless in four at-bats, dropping his season batting average to 0.244 from 0.250.
In his first at-bat, Kim had a somewhat unfortunate turn of events. With one out in the second inning, he struck out swinging against Marcus Stroman. Kim stuck his bat out, but the umpire, not the first base umpire, called it a swinging strike. Kim stood there for a moment in disappointment before turning to the dugout.
His second at-bat came in the bottom of the third inning with runners on first and second. He hit a grounder to shortstop. In his third at-bat, with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, he had more bad luck. A hard hit ball fell into the infield and turned into a fielder’s choice. In his final at-bat, with two outs in the eighth inning, he struck out swinging.
The San Diego mound was bombarded by the Cubs bats early in the game. In the top of the first inning, Ian Happ gave up an RBI single to give the Dodgers a 1-0 lead.
Another run came in the top of the second. He gave up back-to-back singles to leadoff hitter Jan Gomes and Trey Mancini to make it 0-3, and then a two-run double to Dansby Swanson to make it 0-5. The runs kept coming. A two-run homer to Miguel Amaya in the top of the third made it 7-0.
San Diego rallied in the bottom of the third. Juan Soto hit an RBI groundout to cut the lead to 1-7, but the Padres were unable to capitalize on any of their scoring opportunities and fell to 1-7. The offense managed just five hits through nine innings.안전놀이터
Starting pitcher Ryan Weathers took the loss for San Diego, allowing five runs on seven hits (two home runs) with one walk and one strikeout in 1⅔ innings. At the plate, Fernando Tatis Jr. had a multi-hit game, but it was overshadowed by the loss.
The loss snapped the team’s winning streak. They are now 27-32 on the season and are in fourth place in the National League West.
